Career Profile: Logistics Jobs Offer Exciting Opportunities

Portrait of a African American businessman in logistics warehouseLogistician jobs are expected to soar 21.9 percent by 2022. If you’ve been waiting on the sidelines, curious about this career, here’s what you need to know.

Logistics Education

Logistics careers don’t really require extensive education, but you’ll need an associate’s degree at least. This is fine, since you can hop online and find an online college in California that will give you a great degree.

Many colleges that offer a BS in supply chain management or process engineering are also very affordable – especially if you’re pursuing the online education route.

There are also certifications you can pursue that will help you find a job, but they won’t replace a degree.

Most employers do look for a combination of education and experience, but you can usually get by with minimal experience as long as you have a degree from an accredited university. If you have a certificate, plan on also having experience to go with it.

Logistics Job Market

The job market for this industry is expected to grow faster than its normal pace over the next 10 years. Individual markets are shifting to a global economy, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics tells us that the projected increase in jobs will be 22 percent by 2022.

Even the current market is rather large, with 125,900 jobs reported within the last few years.

If you’re looking to get into the industry, now is the time to start your educational journey. Even with that degree, some employers are still looking for experience, and you may need to work as an intern for at least 6 months before you get a good job.

Logistics Salaries

Salaries for this industry vary depending on where you live. A bachelor’s degree is worth it when you want a pay bump. The median salary for Logisticians is about $72,780. Of course, this depends on the company you work for too as well as the experience you bring to the table. The top 10 percent of Logisticians earn $112,100 annually.

Jobs are generally available at all education levels, even though it seems like a complicated job that requires an advanced degree. Truck drivers, warehouse workers, and forklift operators are all within the realm of the logistics team, but they’re organized by logistics executives.

So, it may be that you’re essentially a manager at a large or mid-sized company overlooking staff and organizing labor.

Where You Should Start and What The Job Is Like

Logistics sometimes feels like a boring job, but once you’re in it, it’s not. The variety of work always keeps the job interesting, and crossover is often a part of the job at many companies. And, the very job itself can change depending on the company you’re working for.

That’s because Logisticians handle a variety of industries and work for companies that produce a wide range of goods and services.

And, you can start your career almost anywhere. Yes, you might need to relocate to a specific area of region, but nearly every company and organization needs workers and managers.
