Unlocking the Potential of Black Colleges with Your Input
Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) are not just academic institutions; they are the bedrock of Black academic, social, and cultural history. However, the disparity in HBCU funding compared to their counterparts is both glaring and concerning.

With your support, we hope to close the information gap and give these groups a real look into the hopes, problems, and values of our community.

HBCU Funding in the Current Political Landscape
According to the Biden-Harris administration's fact sheet on Historic Investments and Support for HBCUs, their commitment to addressing these disparities is evident. Since January 2021, they have allocated over $5.8 billion to support HBCUs. Notably, this includes:
- $3.7 billion from the American Rescue Plan to counteract pandemic impacts.
- Debt relief amounting to $1.6 billion for capital improvements.
- Grant funding of over $500 million for academic capacity building.
Furthermore, the proposed Build Back Better Act promises a $10 billion infusion into HBCUs and other minority-serving institutions, with $2 billion earmarked specifically for HBCUs.
Philanthropy and Its Role in HBCU Funding
While governmental efforts are commendable, philanthropy's relationship with HBCUs has been a mixed bag. A report on Philanthropy and HBCUs states that from 2002 to 2019, there was a decrease in foundation funding to HBCUs. However, there's a silver lining: preliminary data suggests that in 2020, HBCU funding from foundations could have reached a staggering $249 million. This uptick is attributed to social justice movements, emphasizing the power of public advocacy.
The Vital Role and Standing of HBCUs
HBCUs aren't just institutions; they're launchpads for socio-economic mobility. According to the Goldman Sachs report titled “Historically Black, Historically Underfunded – Investing in HBCUs,” these institutions award 13% of bachelor's degrees to Black students, despite funding challenges. Moreover, HBCU funding such as endowments saw a significant boost in 2021. The Plug's article highlights that the total value increased by 33%, with a significant contribution from MacKenzie Scott.
