Dr. Tony Atwater is NSU's fifth president
NORFOLK, Va. ( WAVY) – On July 1, Norfolk State University (NSU) welcomed its fifth president, Dr. Tony Atwater.
Atwater says he wants to expand and strengthen programs at the university, but says his main focus is the students.
“We're about achieving dreams and helping students to achieve success beyond measure,” said Atwater.
One of those dreams is expanding graduate and professional programs at the university.
Atwater continued, “At the forefront of my vision for Norfolk State University is serving the student and the faculty and helping the institution develop to go to the next level you know. Academic success and academic strength.”
Atwater is very familiar with leading a campus community having most recently served as the president of Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
“My responsibility as president of Norfolk State University is to give those students an exciting, enriching experience. Helping them to have that experience in a safe environment and helping them to grow not only as students but as individuals,” said Atwater.
Atwater is looking forward to his wife, Dr. Beverly Atwater serving as first lady on campus. His mother and twin brother also live in Virginia.
