HBCUs with NROTC Scholarship Programs

HBCUs with NROTC Scholarship ProgramsIf you’re searching for a way to serve your country while receiving a quality education at the same time, then HBCUs which offer NROTC scholarship programs may be ideal for you. Here, we’ll review the basics of the NROTC and some requirements you should keep in mind, as well as provide you with a current list of HBCUs which offer this proud option.

What is NROTC?

NROTC stands for Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps. This long-standing institution has allowed countless young men and women to obtain an education while serving their country at the same time. NROTC offers a wonderful background for the civilian workforce, as well as for students who choose to make the military their career.

NROTC scholarships pay for a student’s college expenses (research to determine exactly which expenses are covered), and in return the student excels academically, completes summer training courses and commits to a number of years of active military duty. There are also age requirements associated with these programs, and prospective students must either be a US citizen or national. Other important requirements include passing a physical fitness test, being within specified height and weight requirements and having a background free of drug or alcohol abuse.

The NROTC is not for everybody. It takes a particularly disciplined, hardworking and dedicated student to meet the standards set by the US military. However, for those who are up to the challenge, NROTC can be an extremely rewarding choice.

There are three options within NROTC; US Marine, Navy and Navy Nursing Corps. Research these branches of the military thoroughly before making your decision.

Which HBCUs Offer NROTC Scholarship Programs?

Although the NROTC is a large organization, it’s not available at every college or university. The following is a current list of HBCUs which offer this option.

  • Clark Atlanta University (Georgia)
  • Dillard University (Louisiana)
  • Florida A&M University
  • Hampton University (Virginia)
  • Howard University (Washington DC)
  • Huston-Tillotson University (Texas)
  • Morehouse College (Georgia)
  • Norfolk State University (Virginia)
  • Prairie View A&M University (Texas)
  • Savannah State University (Georgia)
  • Southern University and A&M College (Louisiana)
  • Spelman College (Georgia)
  • Tennessee State University
  • Tuskegee University (Alabama)
  • Xavier University (Louisiana)

As you explore your NROTC options, remember to ask a counselor or recruiter about the necessary requirements for NROTC scholarships. Some conditions are rather obvious, such as academic performance. Others, such as piercings and tattoos, often come as a surprise. Do your research to avoid any unexpected obstacles in your pursuit of a military education.
