For millions of students, alumni, and diehard football fans, HBCU homecoming week is the most important event of the school year. From canceled classes and class reunions to tailgating parties and HBCU football games, homecoming has become a celebration of life, advancement, and cultural achievement within the black community.
But as the United States struggles to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic, many HBCU homecoming events have been canceled or postponed until the following school year. Don’t worry – there are still plenty of ways for you to show your school pride while you’re celebrating at home!
HBCU Homecoming 2020 Is Coming To You
Some schools have taken a different approach to homecoming week: instead of canceling all of their events, they are moving the celebration online. Saint Augustine’s University is putting the Blue and White Experience 2020 on social media, while Central State University is hosting a virtual homecoming week as part of their event theme, “Innovation Is In Our DNA”.
But HBCU Football May Have To Wait
To protect the health of student-athletes and fans, MEAC and SWAC have canceled the fall sports season. That means that there will be no formal HBCU football games this year, the crown jewels of the black homecoming experience.
As sports take a backseat to safety, this is a great time to share HBCU homecoming 2020 events with people who would normally not be able to attend. Buy HBCU merchandise to support your favorite school, or go to a virtual party with a loved one who can experience HBCU homecoming week for the first time.
