The HBCU-9 Celebrate Their 150th Birthdays in 2017

Morgan State University celebrates 150 years of Purpose, Progress, and Promise.

In addition to their celebrations throughout the year, the nine Historically Black Colleges and Universities that found in 1867 will hold a united celebration during the week of September 24—30, 2017. The United Sesquicentennial Celebration will include parallel activities take place on each campus from Sunday, September 24, through Tuesday, September 26, 2017. These individual institutional activities will be followed by a United HBCU-9 Sesquicentennial Summit on the campus of Morgan State University from Thursday, September 28 to Saturday, September 30, 2017.

The Summit will include a Thursday evening United HBCU-9 Choir Concert; a Friday Torch Relay ending at a historical Civil Rights site on Morgan’s campus; an Opening Ceremony.A Leadership Roundtable Discussion with HBCU-9 Chancellors and Presidents; a Luncheon with keynote speaker; a Fireside Chat of HBCU-9 Chancellors and Presidents with government and foundation leaders; and a Closing Breakfast with a keynote speaker.

Location: Washington, DC

Johnson C. Smith University

Founded: April 7, 1867
Location: Charlotte, NC

Morehouse College

Founded: As Augusta Baptist Institute in 1867
Location: Atlanta, GA

Morgan State University

Founded: January 30, 1867
Location: Baltimore, MD

St. Augustine’s University

Founded: July 19, 1867
Location: Raleigh, NC

Talladega College

Founded: November 1867
Location: Talladega, AL
