Moving into a dorm room or an apartment is an exciting moment. It’s one of the first times that students get an opportunity to decorate their space and make it their own. With many students returning to campus for the first time in over a year, ideas for decorating dorm rooms and apartments will be in high demand. To make the transition back to class a little easier, The Home Depot partnered with interior designer Whitney Jones to makeover the apartment of Brittany Goddard, a first-year law student at Texas State University’s Thurgood Marshall School of Law.

Brittany’s story is one of perseverance and determination.

The first-year law student grew up in a single parent home where her mom sacrificed everything she had to ensure Brittany and her brother had a roof over their head. Her mother’s dream to build a better life for her children, allowed Brittany and her brother to go to college, but that was just the beginning of Brittany’s journey.

After graduating high school and attending Howard University, Brittany had to continue overcoming obstacles that had become all too familiar growing up.

In 2020, Brittany lost her job during the pandemic and found herself around $9,000 short of paying her tuition during her final semester. With her back against the wall, Brittany started a GoFund me page and was able to raise enough money to pay her tuition and graduate with a degree in Political Science and Spanish.

Graduating from Howard University was a lifelong dream for Brittany because she wanted to earn an education at an HBCU that personified excellence and an institution that would shape her life for the better. Now she is embarking on a new chapter that will put her in position to create meaningful change in Black communities across the country.

Brittany was recently accepted into Texas State University’s Thurgood Marshall School of Law, where she will begin her quest to make a positive impact on the justice system. She will also be moving into her own apartment for the first time.

After hearing Brittany’s inspiring story, Whitney and The Home Depot decided to make the first-year law student’s transition a little smoother.
