The National Council on Teacher Quality (NCTQ) was founded in 2000 to provide an alternative voice to existing teacher organizations. Based in Washington, D.C, this council advocates for tougher evaluations of classroom teachers. It is primarily known for its Teacher Preparation Review that helps future teachers to select good schools and makes it easier for school districts to find educators who are well-prepared.

On June 17, 2014, NCTQ released its annual ranking of teacher preparation programs. The report outlines which education programs are building the best teachers, and which ones need to set up their game. The rankings are based on various standards set over eight years and ten pilot studies. With the help of domestic and international teacher education experts, National Council on Teacher Quality takes an in-depth look at admission standards, course syllabi, textbooks, course requirements, student teaching manuals, and graduate surveys, among other sources to score various elementary and secondary teaching courses.

The second edition of NCTQ’s annual assessment evaluated 2400 teacher preparation programs at 1,127 institutions. Of which, 1,612 undergraduate and graduate education programs were ranked by NCTQ using crucial standards it designated. Among schools training elementary and secondary teachers, eight and eleven HBCU’s respectively made to the list. As programs preparing elementary school educators are often different from those preparing high school teachers, so they were ranked separately. Let’s find out which HBCU’s proudly made to the rankings list.
