Producer and Director of Point & Drive Brandi Mitchell is taking her highly anticipated documentary to screens across the nation. On Friday, June 24th, she hosted a red carpet screening at the Ray Charles Performing Arts Center of Morehouse College at 8:30 pm.

Point & Drive Documentary and Screening

The film depicts a chronological depiction of the band’s legacy under the direction of Dr. William P. Foster, who is known for his influence in setting the standard for how many marching bands operate today. With untold stories from five generations of band classes between 1961 and 2013, it explains what it takes to be a part of such a historical entity.

This screening, in particular, was done in partnership with the Precision Incorporated Summer Band Camp. The camp provides an opportunity for students to receive exceptional instruction from some of the best band directors, clinicians, and dance instructors in America, including the creative team behind the movies Drumline and Drumline: A New Beat.

“We recognize that our youth could be doing anything else, but we support initiatives like Precision Incorporated particularly in an age where music is being taken out of our schools,” says Mitchell.

Brandi Mitchell’s Marching Band Experience

A former clarinet player in Florida A&M’s Marching 100 herself, Brandi Mitchell is reminded that she stands on the shoulders of giants and hopes that this film will connect with not only middle and high school age students but adults experiencing a transitional period of self-discovery as well.

“There is a discipline that is required to achieve one’s definition of success. Point and Drive helps reignite that passion in those who want to recalibrate the current season of their lives.”

Notable Atlanta Community Members in Attendance

The audience comprised of proud parents, community influencers, and tastemakers. HBCU alumni from Florida A&M University, North Carolina A&T University, Bethune-Cookman University, Tennessee State University, Morehouse College, Southern University, Central State University, and more were also in attendance.

They were able to listen to personal accounts from successful alumni such as Grammy Winning Jazz legends like Scotty Barnhart, Wycliffe Gordon and Vincent Gardner, and famous artists like Dwele. Shot over a three-year period, the documentary consists of unprecedented original interviews, music, live performances, dancing and rare archival footage and images of the process of mastering the renowned Point and Drive technique.

Director of Bands at FAMU Dr. Shelby R. Chipman and Owner of Supreme Fish Delight Restaurants Waleed Shamsid-Deen were also in attendance. Tickets for future screenings are available at pointanddrivemovie.com.
