MVSU History

  • MVSU, originally a vocational school, was founded in 1950 in order to enroll African American students while easing the escalating pressure of ending the legal segregation of public schools, which was declared unconstitutional just 4 years later in the historic Supreme Court case Brown v. the Board of Education.
  • It was renamed Mississippi Valley State College in 1964 and the college was granted university status in 1974, when it also received its current name.
  • The University offered its first master's degree in 1976 and now offers the master's degree in environmental health, elementary education, criminal justice, business administration, special education, rural public policy and the master of arts in teaching.
  • Dr. Joe L. Boyer became MVSU's third president in January 1982 and was followed by Dr. William W. Sutton in July 1988. Dr. Lester C. Newman became the fifth president on July 1, 1998. Dr. Donna H. Oliver became MVSU's sixth president and also the first female president on January 1, 2009. On November 6, 2013, Dr. William Bynum took office as MVSU's seventh president.
