miles logoMiles College is a historically black college founded in 1898. It is located in Fairfield, Alabama, which is six miles (10 km) west of Birmingham, Alabama. It is a private liberal arts institution of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church (CME Church). Miles College is also a member of the United Negro College Fund. It’s nickname is the Golden Bears and the University is member of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC). Their colors are Purple and Gold and their motto is Knowledge and Peace and Love for all.

History

miles history

  • Miles College began organization efforts in 1893 and was founded in 1898 by the Colored Methodist Episcopal Church.
  • It was chartered as Miles Memorial College, in honor of Bishop William H. Miles.
  • The College is one of only 39 HBCUs to have the designation of a United Negro College Fund (UNCF) institution.
  • In 1941 the name was changed to Miles College.

Campus

The college sits on 51 acres (210,000 m2) where there are over 16 facilities. Recently, Miles College purchased the Lloyd Noland Hospital site which will increase the size of the campus to 76 acres (310,000 m2).

Faculty

  • Miles College has 135 faculty members who are visibly committed to higher learning and professional development.
  • Faculty members are diverse and bring professional and personal experiences from over twenty countries.
  • At least 30% of the faculty members are from Asia and African countries.

Academics

The College offers baccalaureate programs with majors such as Accounting, Biology, Business Administration, Chemistry, Communications, Computer and Information Sciences, History, Language Arts, Criminal Justice, Early Childhood/Elementary Education, English, Mathematics, Political Science and Social Work. In sum, Miles offers 28 Bachelor Degree programs in six academic divisions to an enrollment of approximately 1,700 students.

Facilities

  • The Center of Academic Excellence program at Miles College prepares undergraduate students with global skill sets that are critically needed by the nation’s intelligence community.
  • The library supports students and faculty in their educational and instructional goals by providing on-site and off campus access to a variety resources and an environment that promotes inquiry.
  • Office of Career Planning provides progressive services and resources to help students, faculty, staff, and graduates clarify and attain their career goals through the use of career and educational services such as self-development seminars, career counseling, mentors, information technology, job search guidance, and making information available to students to apply for internships, and employment.
  • Student Health Services exists at Miles College to help meet the health needs of the students, by providing information and access to services that will help preserve students’ physical health and well-being, while they are involved in rigorous study of the liberal arts as preparation for work and life-long learning.
  • Miles College maintains residence for approximately 488 students. This includes one dormitory for men, one for women, and one overflow.

Alumni

Miles College strives to maintain a close, positive relationship with it's alumni body, while at the same time fostering greater communication between alumni and each other, and with the College.
