Kentucky State University

Kentucky State University (KSU or, less commonly, KYSU to differentiate from Kansas State University) is a four-year institution of higher learning, located in Frankfort, Kentucky, United States, the Commonwealth’s capital. The school is an historically black university, founded in 1886. It’s nickname is the Thorobreds and Thorobrettes and the University is a member of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference(SIAC). Their colors are Green and Gold and their motto is Enter to Learn, Exit to Serve.

History

  • The school was chartered in 1886 and opened in 1887 as the State Normal School for Colored Persons.
  • In 1890, the U.S. Government made the school a land grant institution.
  • In 1902, the name of the school was changed to the Kentucky Normal and Industrial Institute for Colored Persons, which was changed again in 1926 to the Kentucky State Industrial College for Colored Persons.
  • In 1938, the school became known as the Kentucky State College for Negroes (the “for Negroes” was dropped in 1952).
  • The college became a full-fledged university in 1972.
  • In 1973, Kentucky State offered its first graduate programs.

Campus

KSU’s location in Frankfort permits the University to offer unique and outstanding state government student internships that cannot be matched by any other Kentucky higher education institution. Participating students gain first-hand experience in government administration while earning from 3 to 12 academic semester credit hours. Size of the campus is 511 acres (2.06 km²).

Academics

Kentucky State University is currently divided into three main colleges:

  • College of Arts, Social Sciences and Interdisciplinary Studies
  • College of Mathematics, Sciences, Technology and Health
  • College of Professional Studies

Facilities

  • Kentucky State University offers many alternatives for you to achieve your educational and career goals. In addition to over 650 on-campus classes offered each semester, the University also offers a wide range of distance-learning options that are ideal solutions for students with time and distance restraints.
  • Educational Talent Search identifies and assists individuals from diverse backgrounds who have the potential to succeed in higher education. The primary goal of Talent Search is to increase the number of youth who complete high school and enroll in a college or university.
  • The University Professional Development Center (UPDC) is dedicated to facilitating all professional development workshops and training activities on the Kentucky State University campus. The center provides dedicated staff and technical resources which can be scheduled to provide faculty and staff training sessions to upgrade or enhance professional and/or pedagogical skills.
  • The Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) was organized on July 1, 2004 with the purpose of : 1) generating extramural resources in support of the University and its programs through the competitive proposal process; 2) assisting KSU and grant recipients with the administration of funded grants/contracts.
  • The Office of Global Education and Programs (OGEP) provide many different services for international students visiting KSU.

Alumni

The Office of Alumni Relations strives to promote opportunities for recruitment and retention of alumni members. One of the main goals of the Office is to keep alumni informed and encourage active participation in Kentucky State University activities.
