Founded in 1873, this historically black institution began as a normal school to provide education to newly emancipated slaves. It’s nickname is the Belles and the University is a member of the United Methodist Church UNCF. Their colors are Blue and White and their motto is Celebrate Educate Oasis.

In 1873, Bennett College had its beginning in the unplastered basement of the Warnersville Methodist Episcopal Church (now known as St. Matthew’s Methodist Church). In 1874 the Freedmen’s Aid Society took over the school which remained under its auspices for 50 years. In 1926, The Women’s Home Missionary Society joined with the Board of Education of the church to make Bennett College in Greensboro, N.C., formerly co-educational, a college for women.

Bennett’s fifty-five acre campus is located in Greensboro, North Carolina. Greensboro boasts a number of cultural, social activities and venues just a short distance from the campus. Conveniently located near The Piedmont-Triad International Airport, the campus is easily accessible from Interstates 40 and 85.

Academics

  • Bennett college offers 20 majors and 19 minors under 3 divisions: Division of Natural and Behavioral Sciences and Mathematics, Division of Social Sciences and Education, and Division of Humanities.
  • These disciplines include degrees in bachelor of arts, bachelor of science, bachelor of arts and science in interdisciplinary studies, bachelor of social work, and the bachelor of fine arts.
