Morgan State University also referred as MSU is a historically black college located in Balitmore, Maryland, United States. Founded in 1867 by the Baltimore Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church as a private institution, it became a public institution in 1939 and a doctoral-granting university in 1975. Throughout its history, MSU has been a comprehensive institution emphasizing the arts and sciences and a strong general education in all fields of study, a tradition that continues today. Currently, Morgan is a member of Thurgood Marshall College Fund and possesses its own governing board of regents.

Morgan State University Campus Setting
Morgan State University covers an area of more than 143 acres nestled among rolling hills. Built on two slopes, it is strategically located in the picturesque northeastern section of Baltimore and is surrounded by rapidly growing residential communities. The University offers both easy access to suburban life and proximity to an urban center.
Academics
Morgan State University is one of the few historically black colleges to offer a wide range of academic programs in engineering, business, education, architecture, hospitality management and social work. Moreover, there are programs in arts and sciences leading to the doctorate.

Athletics
MSU athletic teams are known as the Bears, and there are 12 varsity sports teams in total. They compete in the NCAA’s Division I Mideastern Athletic Conference. The football team competes in Division I-AA. Intercollegiate sports teams include men’s basketball, football, cross country tennis, and indoor and outdoor track and field. Women’s teams include bowling, volleyball, and softball.
Morgan State University History
Founded in 1867 by the Baltimore Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church to educate young men in ministry, the Centenary Biblical Institute, as it was known at the time, received the name Morgan College in 1890 to honor Reverend. Lyttleton Morgan, the first Board Chairman who donated land to the college. The school soon started training both men and women to become teachers, and the first degree was awarded to George F. McMechen in 1895. This college remained a private institution until it was purchased by the state in 1939 as an institution of opportunity for its black population. Finally, Morgan received university status in 1975.
