Dillard University

Dillard University is a private, historically black liberal arts college in New Orleans, Louisiana, United States. Founded in 1930 incorporating earlier institutions that went back to 1869, it is affiliated with the United Church of Christ and the United Methodist Church.

The campus is near Gentilly Boulevard and the London Avenue Canal, established in the 1930s. It’s nickname is the Bleu Devils and the University is a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). Their colors are Royal Blue and White and their motto is Ex Fide, Fortis.

History

  • Dillard University is a four-year, private, liberal arts, coeducational school created in 1930 by the merging of its two parent institutions, Straight University and Union Normal School.
  • In 1869, Straight University, later renamed Straight College, was established by the Congregational Church.
  • In 1869, Union Normal School was founded by the Methodist Episcopal Church.
  • By the end of the century, Union Normal School was renamed New Orleans University.
  • On June 6, 1930, Straight College and New Orleans University merged to form Dillard University.
  • In 1935, Dillard University moved to its present location.

Campus

Dillard University’s campus is located on 55 acres (22.3 ha) in the suburban-like Gentilly neighborhood of the New Orleans 7th Ward district. The campus is anchored by Neoclassical architecture and live oak trees. The double tree-lined “Avenue of the Oaks” forms the focal point of the gated campus.

Academics

Dillard University offers Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, and Bachelor of Science in Nursing degrees in over 35 majors. The diverse major, minor, and course offerings create an opportunities for a comprehensive, global education. These majors are organized within six academic schools, and further subdivided by departments:

  • School of Business
  • School of Educational & Psychological Studies
  • School of Humanities
  • Division of Natural Sciences and Public Health
  • School of Nursing
  • Division of Social Sciences

Facilities

  • Dillard University hosts a wide variety of summer programs, including athletic camps, youth and adult residential programs, conferences and trade shows, workshops, seminars and many more.
  • Dillard students go on to some of the best graduate schools in the world.
  • Dillard currently has alumni studying at Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Johns Hopkins and the London School of Economics, among others.
  • Dillard University is also the only university in the United States that is a partner in the Melton Foundation.
  • Dillard students who become Melton Fellows participate in intercultural training, leadership development, and global education through symposia, travel, online activities, project grants, and social service.
