Hospitality Degree Programs Available at HBCUs

Glasses and plates on table in restaurant with food background.The hospitality industry is huge and provides an array of career options in tourism, restaurants, event planning, cruise lines, lodging, resort clubs, and more. In fact, if you are seriously considering a career in this diverse and dynamic industry, there are plenty of opportunities for advancement.

But, as there are a large number of hospitality degree programs offered by various Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), it’s not easy selecting a school. To help you, we composed a list of HBCUs that specialize in the best Hospitality Programs.

University of Maryland Eastern Shore

The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) is a public college located in Princess Anne campus in Maryland. It’s an upper division program that offers full-time and part-time curriculum plans of study in Hospitality and Tourism Management. The basic program offers a traditional two-year course with internship opportunities.

North Carolina Central University

A public college located in Durham campus in NC, North Carolina Central University offers a Bachelor’s degree program in Hospitality and Tourism Administration. Each student experiences three paid internships (1,000 hours) providing valuable work experience prior to graduation.

Morgan State University

Morgan State University is located in the harbor city of Baltimore, Maryland. Here, The Hospitality Management Program has a strong business component. In addition to the general education and the School of Business and Management requirements, it is essential for students to take 27 hours of hospitality management courses.

Virginia State University

The Hospitality Management Program at the Virginia State University has been recognized by the Accreditation Commission for Programs in Hospitality Administration (ACPHA) since 1995. Located in Petersburg campus in Virginia, the degree program here is a blend of field experience and classroom theory in preparation for the baccalaureate degree; B.Sc. in Hospitality Management.

Tuskegee University

Tuskegee University is a small non-profit college located at Tuskegee campus in Alabama. At present, it offers Bachelor’s degree in General Hospitality Administration and Management. The university is known to have its students recruited by Fortune 500 companies.

Delaware State University

Located at Dover campus Delaware State University offers a Bachelor’s degree in Hospitality and Tourism Management. It is the only HBCU whose HTM program is recognized by both AACSB (Association to Advance College Schools of Business) and ACPHA (Accreditation Commission for Programs in Hospitality Administration).

Howard University

Howard University is a non-profit college located in Washington, District of Columbia. The hospitality curriculum is designed to provide both theoretical and practical experience to address the changing needs of the hospitality industry. Here the Hospitality Management Program offers a Bachelor of Business Administration in Hospitality Management.

Grambling State University

Grambling State University is located in Grambling, Louisiana. It offers the Hotel Restaurant Program with an option of having a Hospitality Tourism Management concentration or minor. This concentration and minor complements the Management degree program.

Hampton University

Hampton University is located in Hampton, Virginia. It offers a Bachelor’s degree of science in Hotel and Resort Management. In addition to course work, students complete required internships and gain exposure in the field.

Bethune Cookman University

Located at Daytona Beach, Florida, Bethune Cookman University offers a degree program leading to the Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management. The university has a national reputation for successful integration of technology and education.

Cheyney University of Pennsylvania

Cheyney University of Pennsylvania is located in Cheyney, Pennsylvania. It offers a degree program leading to the Bachelor of Science in Hospitality and Recreation Management preparing students for ever-changing global society.

University of The District of Columbia

University of The District of Columbia is located in Washington, District of Columbia. It offers an associate degree in Hospitality Management and Tourism providing students with the knowledge and skills for the entry level position.

Tougaloo College

Tougaloo College is located in Tougaloo, Mississipi. It offers an associate of arts degree in Hotel and Hospitality Management under the Department of Economics.

St Philip’s College

Located in San Antonio campus in Texas, St Philip’s College offers a number of degree programs focused on the culinary arts and hotel management which includes baking and Pastry Arts, Hotel Management, Culinary Arts, Hospitality Management, and Restaurant Management.

Coahoma Community College

Coahoma Community College is located in Clarksdale campus in Mississippi. It offers an Associate degree program in Hotel Administration and Management which prepares students for a career in resort, lodging, restaurant, resort management, or casino.
