Are you ready for HBCU Homecoming 2021? After a year off from the traditional HBCU Homecoming events due to the unprecedented impact of COVID-19, black college football is back! Athletic departments across the HBCU nation, including the MEAC, SWAC, CIAA, SIAC, and GCAC conferences, will kicking-off the 2021 season in late August.
Last year's HBCU homecoming festivities were limited to virtual events, including concerts and band performances. These events were excellent under the circumstances, but they can never replace the in-person experience.
The homecoming tradition is one of the best parts of the black college experience. Former students and graduates have an opportunity to come back to campus to reminisce on good times and reconnect as a family and old friends (while practicing recommended safety protocols).
“Coming out of the pandemic, we didn’t get a chance to have homecoming last year, so we’re excited to host our alumni, friends and community partners”
Braylin Laster, Lane College, Director of Alumni Affairs
HBCU Homecoming 2021 Events
Many of us are used to the traditional HBCU Homecoming week events such as tailgating, homecoming concerts, Greek step shows, and coronations. Things may look different depending on the individual Universities.
Each school will determine it's own health and safety precautions for in-person events; so check for their websites further information regarding Homecoming COVID-19 precautions.
“The homecoming committee is excited to see our Aggie family return to campus, and we are working hard to make sure that this year’s celebration is an enjoyable and safe experience … Although this year will feel different and there will be safety procedures put in place, the Aggie spirit will remain alive and well.”
Teresa M. Davis, North Carolina A&T Associate Vice Chancellor for Alumni Relations
This fall, alumni, students, and community members planning to attend Homecoming will have plenty of events to participate in for 2021. Still, you should anticipate COVID-19 restrictions in place for the various activities, including tailgating. Whether you're interested in HBCU homecoming concerts, Greek step shows, or homecoming coronations, be sure to check your school's website, as activities are subject to change.
