It is located in unincorporated Wood County, Texas, near Hawkins. It was founded in 1912, and is currently headed by President Dr. Lester C. Newman. It’s nickname is the Jarvis Bulldogs and the University is a member of the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC). Their colors are Red and Navy Blue and their motto is Imagining the Possibilities…One Learner at a Time.

    jarvis history

  • Jarvis Christian College began as Jarvis Christian Institute, modeled after the Southern Christian Institute of Edwards, Mississippi. Formal instructional programs commenced on January 13, 1913, with an enrollment of twelve students, all in the elementary grades.
  • The recorded history began in 1904, when the Negro Disciples of Christ in Texas, spearheaded by Mrs. Mary Alphin, State Organizer, in conjunction with the Christian Woman’s Board of Missions, began planning for a school for Black youth.


  • Jarvis Christian College, an accredited, private, co-educational, church-related college, is located one mile east of Hawkins, Texas, and four miles west of Big Sandy, Texas, on U.S. Highway 80. It is fourteen miles from U.S. Interstate 20.
  • Accessible Texas cities within a radius of thirty miles are Mineola, eighteen miles west; Gladewater, fifteen miles east; Tyler, twenty miles south; and Longview, twenty-five miles east.
  • The campus is situated in an attractive wooded area of about 1,000 acres, providing adequate room for future expansion. The campus proper covers approximately 243 acres.

  • A major and a minor are required for the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees. The Bachelor of Business Administration requires a major core of courses and a specialization area.
  • Normally, a major consists of a minimum of 36 semester hours and a minor consists of a minimum of 24 semester hours. Since the number of semester hours required for a major or a minor depends upon departmental regulations, students should check the number of hours required for a specific major or minor.


  • Teacher certification programs are an integral part of the College. The mission of the Teacher Education Program is to develop a community of educators that embraces student learning as a primary commitment.
  • The Olin Learning Resource Center (OLRC) contains the Library, Media Center, Teacher Education Resource Center, and Archives.
  • The Office of Financial Aid is fully engaged in the mission and goals of Jarvis Christian College as the college not only continues the transformation of its physical campus; but also continues transforming the lives of students through spiritual, scholarly, and leadership opportunities.
