History

• Initially founded in 1925, the Alabama School of Trades was the first state-operated trade school in the southern United States.
• In 1973, the name was changed to Alabama Technical College, and it is currently identified as the East Broad Campus of Gadsden State Community College.
• The Gadsden Vocational Trade School began in 1960.
• In 1962 the State of Alabama assumed ownership of the school and in 1972 it was renamed Gadsden State Technical Institute.
• On February 28, 1985, the Alabama State Board of Education merged Alabama Technical College, Gadsden State Technical Institute, and Gadsden State Junior College. Gadsden State Community College was formed.
• The U.S. Department of Education designated this institution as a Historically Black College (HBCU) in 1997. It is now identified as the Valley Street Campus of Gadsden State Community College.

Gadsden State Community College has six campuses located between the Coosa River & the Appalachian foothills. Gadsen State has sixty buildings with over a million combined sq. ft. on six campuses.

Facilities

• The Continuing Education Department is committed to linking College and community resources to provide quality enrichment programs to people of all ages.
• The Center offers a variety of fee-based workshops, classes, community-service activities, and continuing-education courses designed for those who want to learn but who are not necessarily interested in earning academic credit or pursuing a college degree.
• High School students take advantage of Early College Enrollment.
• A Federal Pell Grant, unlike a loan, does not have to be repaid. Pell Grants are awarded only to undergraduate students who have not earned a bachelor’s or professional degree.
• FSEOG is awarded to students with exceptional financial need. Priority is given to students who receive Federal Pell Grants. FSEOG does not have to be repaid.
• The Federal Work-Study Program provides jobs for students with financial need, allowing them to earn money to help pay educational expenses. Students earn at least the current federal minimum wage but the amount might be higher depending on the type of work performed and the skills required.

Alumni

Every Gadsden State graduate receives a one-year complimentary membership in the Gadsden State Community College Alumni Association and an invitation to participate in activities of the association.
