Essence Magazine Summer 2014 Internships

It’s that time of year – winter break is almost over and it’s time to kick off the spring semester. While it’s easy to get distracted and focus on the here-and-now, this is also the time to start planning how you’ll spend your time off during the summer.

It can be tempting to slip back into a summer job at the store or office where you worked during high school, but your undergraduate summers are the ideal time to make professional connections and to gain valuable work experience. The right internship can help you land that dream job after graduation so this summer consider investing in your future with an internship at Essence Magazine.

For students studying English, Communications Graphic Design, Journalism or Photo-Journalism, an internship at a national, respected publication offers a lot of utility. Not only can you gain valuable experience that can give you a leg-up in your job search upon graduation, internships are an opportunity for you to try out a career to see if a job is for you. It allows you to determine if you can see yourself working in the profession long-term. Essence Magazine is a terrific publication for aspiring students in journalism and an internship with Essence Magazine offers the opportunity to work in the editorial and publishing departments.

[heading style=”subheader3″]About the Internship[/heading]

The internship program at Essence Magazine is a 9-week paid opportunity for you to learn valuable skills and receive on-the-job training while living in New York City. Not only will an internship at Essence Magazine provide valuable experience that you can list on your resume upon graduation, it will also offer confidence upon returning to campus in the fall and deepen the learning that takes place in the classroom as you work toward completing your degree.

[heading style=”subheader3″]What is Essence Magazine Looking for?[/heading]

Essence Communications, Inc. offers their summer internship program as an offshoot of Time Inc.’s summer program for interns. They are looking for undergraduate and graduate students interested in pursuing a career in the media industry and specifically they’re on the lookout for interns invested in the topics they cover (issues related to African-American women). To intern at Essence Magazine you must be hard working, exhibit great attention to detail and you must be able to work well both in a team and on your own.

[heading style=”subheader3″]Applying to the Essence Magazine Internship Program[/heading]

This internship is very competitive and because of the number of applications Essence Magazine receives it’s important to submit your completed application on or before January 31, 2014. The application must include:

  • A completed application
  • A professional resume
  • A writing sample or a digital portfolio (this should include designs and/or photography)

For complete application instructions and to apply visit: www.timeinc.com/careers/internships.php.

[heading style=”subheader3″]Other Important Details[/heading]

During your internship you must live in New York City and if you aren’t from New York you should contact your college’s career office and ask for support in finding affordable temporary housing. Oftentimes you can rent a dorm room at a college in New York without breaking the bank. While you work as an intern at Essence Magazine you’ll receive a stipend, paid every other week. The bulk of your work will be within one department at the publication but interns learn a lot about other areas of the publication through light exposure to company workflow on a daily basis.

Additional details about the 2014 summer internship program are available on Essence Magazine’s website: www.essence.com/internships.
