Alcorn State Jazz Fest to Feature Grammy Award Winner Arturo Sandoval

Alcorn State University is pleased to announce that a 10-time Grammy Award winner Arturo Sandoval will participate in its annual Jazz Fest slated for Saturday, April 12, at the Vicksburg Convention Center.

Over three decades the Department of Fine Arts at Alcorn State University, with funding from the Mississippi Arts Commission, the Southern Arts Federation and the National Endowment for the Arts, has sponsored what has become Mississippi’s longest-running and one of the most prestigious jazz fests.

The event will include performances by high school and university jazz ensembles from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., workshop by Arturo Sandoval from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m., performance by Mississippi jazz educators from 7:00 to 7:50 p.m., and The Arturo Sandoval Group from 8:00 to 9:30 p.m.

Arturo Sandoval is one of world’s leading jazz trumpet players as well as a renowned classical artist, pianist and composer who has been recognized with numerous awards, including 10 Grammys, six Billboards, an Emmy and a Presidential Medal of Freedom. Arturo has performed and recorded with some of the biggest names in music and has written musical scores for many TV shows and movies, including the movie “For Love or Country” starring Andy Garcia. Undoubtedly, Sandoval is one of the most prominent, brilliant, multifaceted and renowned musicians of our time.

The jazz fest is funded in part by the Mississippi Arts Commission, the Southern Arts Federation and the National Endowment for the Arts. All jazz fest events are free and open to the public.

Alcorn State University Jazz Fest Schedule of Events:

9:00 am – 3:30 pm: Performances by High School and University Jazz Ensembles (Convention Center)

4:00 pm – 5:00 pm: Workshop with Festival Artists (Convention Center)

7:00 pm – 7:50 pm: Performance by Mississippi Jazz Educators (Convention Center)

8:00 pm – 9:30 pm: Arturo Sandoval (Convention Center)
