Online registration for the inaugural Health Moves 5K Run/Walk and Health Expo is officially open. The event will take place on Saturday, October 15, 2011 at 8 am on the Life University campus in Marietta, Georgia.
According to the Georgia Department of Public Health, Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in Georgia. The cardiovascular death rate is 30% higher for African-Americans than whites. Smoking, obesity, lack of physical activity and poor eating habits are all modifiable risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Only 41% of African-American adults are regularly active (30 minutes a day, five days a week), while 30% cite no physical activity at all.
Designed to increase awareness about the health and wellness issues facing the Cobb County and metro Atlanta African-American community, the Healthy Moves 5K Run/Walk and Health Expo will encourage African-Americans to live a healthier lifestyle through improving eating habits and incorporating physical activity into their daily lifestyle. The 5K (3.1 miles) trail course runs through a scenic landscape of Life University that includes a 19th century village, a tranquil stream and rolling hills.
The Health Expo immediately follow the 5k will include health screenings, fitness consultations, nutrition advice, various health related vendor booths, and workshops on key health topics like obesity, heart disease, stroke, and breast and prostate cancer. Attendees will also receive information about future fitness and health workshops presented by the Healthy Moves Initiative.
Registration for the 5K is $20 thru September 30, 2011, and $25 from October 1 through October 10, 2011. There will be no on-site registration. All registered participants will receive a complimentary t-shirt. The Health Expo is free and open to the general public.
