HBCU Students Show True Meaning of Holidays by Donating Toys

Entry #32, December 21, 2010

Article from Claiflin University:

Once again, students at Claflin University have brought the Christmas spirit to local children in need during the holiday season. More than 500 Claflin students donated toys to support the Marine Corps Toys for Tots Foundation’s effort in the Orangeburg area.

“Claflin University students have always been more than generous,” said Stacey Wood, local coordinator for Toys for Tots in Orangeburg, Bamberg, Calhoun, Allendale and Barnwell Counties. “Many of the students who live in town will also volunteer as well this year.”

Overall, Claflin collected enough toys to give four large boxes to Toys for Tots. Those toys will go toward providing Christmas gifts to the 1,300 area children identified by schools, churches and the Department of Social Services as being in need, Wood said.

“Our young men and women really stepped up this year to provide local families with a Christmas they won’t soon forget,” said Carolyn Snell, assistant to the vice president of student services and director of career development. “Year after year, these students demonstrate Claflin’s commitment to valuing people by selflessly giving their own money and time to help others.”

Snell noted that over the past decade, University students have donated toys to either Toys for Tots or the Salvation Army Christmas campaigns.
