Adjusting Your Sleeping Habits for College Life
You already know you won’t be sleeping much during college because of all the studying. But somehow, you have to find a way to get your quota of much-needed rest because your mental stability and your grades depend on it. Pulling an all-nighter may not be a big deal if you do it once in a while, but you can’t do the same thing all the time because your body and mind would suffer, in more ways than one. You could get sick and miss your classes.

Besides avoiding health issues, fixing your sleep routine will help you fix several things, such as your bathroom time and your study habits. Both of these are necessary issues when you live in a dorm.

Here are some tips for sleeping well in college without missing a single morning class.

Use an Alarm Clock Consistently

By setting your alarm clock, you’re setting the amount of sleep you will get every night. Some students use the alarm clock haphazardly, like those that think they can sleep late and simply let the alarm clock do its magic. This might work like a charm the first few times you do it, but this isn't the end all when it comes to waking up without that awful groggy feeling. Sooner or later, your body’s needs would take over and you’ll be sleeping through the alarm more often, regardless of how loud the volume is.

An alarm clock provides a good wake-up call when your body is ready to wake up. For example, you’re training yourself to make do with six hours of sleep instead of eight during weekdays. If you set the alarm around this time-frame, you’ll soon be waking up just before the alarm goes off, and that’s good. Of course, you can give yourself more time to sleep to make up for the sacrifice by setting the alarm late during the weekends.

A Lamp and Your Snooze Time

Snooze time is important for every student trying to wake up earlier than normal. It’s that pleasant time between dreaming and waking up. You know you’re awake but you’re waiting for the rest of your body to realize it.

Snooze time may work against you if you use it to sleep in rather than to wake yourself up. To keep from sleeping through your snooze time, turn on the light. If you can’t do this because you have a roommate who has a different sleeping routine, you’re going to need a lamp that you can keep beside your alarm clock.

Having the light on will remind you that it’s time to get out of bed and start your day. A dim room increases the possibility of sleeping longer, which you don’t want if you have a schedule to keep.

A Bottle of Water by Your Bedside

Put a bottle of drinking water right where you can reach it in the morning. Drinking water as soon as you wake up can help jolt you awake and soothe your parched throat. If you don’t feel like drinking, you can always splash your face with a handful of water during your snooze time.

These tips could work for you, but you can always come up with your own routine for fixing up your sleep time. The important thing is that you make resting a priority even when you barely have time to spare because of your hectic college schedule.
